Wang Yigang

Wang Yigang (b. 1961 Qiqihar, Heilongjiang) is one of the earliest Contemporary Chinese artists to engage in abstraction. Starting in 1980s, when abstract art was considered a symbol of Western capitalism by the Chinese, Wang’s artistic practice was an outright rebellion. Even when the 85’ New Wave contemporary art movement swept through the country, abstraction remained out of the spotlight, especially in conservative Manchuria.

Wang’s venture into Western Modernism was completely spontaneous and extremely lonely, which singled him out among his peers at school. Also, he was not satisfied with abstract art alone. Early in his career, he spent nearly ten years studying other Modernist movements, especially Pablo Picasso’s Cubism. However, by the early 1990s, he abandoned Cubism in favor of Expressionism. Throughout his career, it is precisely the duel force of constant discovery and abandonment that propelled his art forward.
