Born in Huangshi City of Hubei Province in 1963, Wei Guangqing was the leader of the “Hubei Pop” art movement, and is renowned for various artistic modes including painting, performance, and installation. Graduating from the Department of Oil Painting of the China Academy of Art in 1985 in the midst of the ’85 New Wave Movement, Wei went on to become a star in the art movement, as well as a definite figure of Cultural Pop Art in the history of Chinese Contemporary Art. Wei served as the director and professor of the Department of Oil Painting at the Hubei Academy of Fine Arts, the president of the Hubei Oil Painting Society, and a distinguished member of the hubei Artists Association’s Oil Painting Committee, and has made outstanding contributions to the education of contemporary art in his native province.
Wei Guangqing’s 1988’s performance A Simulation Experience on the Suicide Scheme about “1”caused a sensation in Chinese Contemporary Art scene, and led him to dozens of national and international exhibitions including I Don’t Want To Plat Cards with Cezanne(1990, Pasadena, US), The First Guangzhou Trienniale – Reinterpretation: A Decade of Experimental Chinese Art (2002, Guangzhou, China), China! Touring Exhibition(1998, Germany, Austria, Denmark, Poland, Singapore, etc.), Global Conceptualism(2000, Cambridge, US). Wei has also received numerous awards and honors, including Distinguished Painting at China’s Third National Oil Painting Exhibitionand the First Prize of the Second Hubei Oil Painting Exhibition.
