Wintery Mountains Covered with Snow

Being a Chinese invention, woodblock print best resembles ink painting than any other type of printmaking. In recreating Wintry Mountains Covered with Snow in woodblock, familiar elements of ink and wash are reborn with hand-carved wooden plates. Unlike the more conventional woodcut print, where ink is directly applied to the plate, in woodblock print water is added to the ink with each run, thereby fully demonstrating the effect of ink wash. In terms of paper, woodblock is printed on traditional Chinese rice paper, in which the paper’s fibers are reminiscent of Liu Kuo-sung’s “Ripping the Tendons and Pealing the Skin” technique. Through careful renditions of ink and watered layered onto rice paper in countless runs, the emphasis of ink and texture of the original painting is faithfully represented.
