Passing Landscapes

Tzeng Yong-Ning Solo Exhibition Catalog

Passing Landscapes not only expands on established series, but also develops two new ones, Landscape – Uphill and Landscape – Circuit. Regardless of belonging to new or old series, all works are rich in subject matter and exceptional in execution. New works from the Bloom series have new blossoms of creativity; new Swaying Flowers are brighter and more colorful; and new works from the gold-foiled The Flower of Plenary have expanded on the central circular motif into more elaborate compositions, while retaining the strong visual impact of the gold-foil.

The Flower of Plenary

Tzeng Yong-Ning Solo Exhibition Catalog

In Tzeng Yong-ning’s gold-foiled The Flower of Plenary series, a large circle dominates the composition, and is in turn filled with countless smaller circles, of various patterns, colors, sizes. Packed together tightly, there is a sense of unity and harmony, due to the fact that all the individuals are grouped together in a comprehensive whole. Yet, each circle is lively and energetic, seemingly expanding outwards, floating upwards, or squeezing each other. Encompassed in a field of gold, the large circle embodies a solemn planet, sitting scared and elegant in the serenity of space.

Faraway Breeze

Guo Kai Solo Exhibition Catalog

Guo Kai’s brush captures the beauty of Huizhou, not in a solely realistic manner, but in response to his emotions, dreams, and personal perception of nature, in a balance between scenery and self, and also heaven and man. His landscape paintings are seemingly shrouded in layers of colorful dreamlike mist, in which blurry sunsets, aged trees, windy ponds, and vast mountains, sing with poetic resonance, giving the viewer a calming sense of spring. In his recent works, his brushwork, composition, and color have become even more refined and elegant, carrying the spirit of ancient masters, like a faraway breeze, into the golden age of the Song and Yuan Dynasties.

Unaltered Landscapes

Wei Xiong (Xiong Wei)

The paintings of Wei Xiong are exuberant, mythic and boundless in their expansiveness and energy. Working with an alternately muted and sometimes bold and colorful palette, Xiong poses a series of questions within these mostly large-scale oil paintings – questions about mortality, our connectivity to the earth, and our often complex relationship to the divine.

Pine.Smoke.Ink

The Art of Xue Song – Exhibition Catalog

Pine smoke ink, famous throughout China, is a type of precious inkstick made from pine soot, or the deposition of smoke particles from burning pinewood. Xue Song, who is named after the great pines (song in Chinese) of Yellow Mountain, begins his collages by burning printed images, in which the ashes are collected and mixed into his paint; this artistic practice and synthetic medium can be regarded as a new Pine, Smoke, Ink.

Since the late 1990s, Xue Song has made extensive use of traditional Chinese calligraphy and painting, either as ready-made images for his burnt collage, or as classical themes to be reinvented in a contemporary context. Although his practice is derived from Pop Art, it carries a profound sense of Chinese culture and the spirit of ink painting. The artistic practice of Pine, Smoke, Ink opens a new chapter in genre of Modern Ink.

The Scripture of a Missionary of Modern Ink Painting

Liu Kuo-sung Print Catalog Vol. II

In order to continue promoting Liu Kuo-sung’s art, and also to share his achievements with more art lovers, Loftyart Gallery decided to produce a series of autographed handmade limited edition prints. The prints are to become a missionary’s scriptures, for sharing with the world. This notion is recognized by Liu himself, and under his authorization, supervision, and kind guidance, Loftyart commissioned a professional printmaking studio to create a series of ten prints in woodblock, etching, and silkscreen prints, and received critical-acclaim upon the prints’ release in late 2014.

Eight Views of Taiwan

Lin Pang-soong, Zhou Gang, Xue Song – Art Creation Project Catalog

Eight Views of Taiwan first appeared in 1694 in the official Taiwan Chorography. In the four following centuries, the list of Eight Views has undergone a series of changes according to the times, due to not only the island’s development and social growth, but also the people’s choice of aesthetics and sense of cultural identification. What makes a scenery beautiful? A viewer’s opinion often oversteps the boundaries of objectivity. From 2013, three cross-strait artists, Lin (Apex) Pang-soong, Zhou Gang, and Xue Song, were invited for the Eight Views of Taiwan creation project. Without a preconceived list of Eight Views, the artists were invited to travel around Taiwan, and through their experience and interaction with the island, each represent the scenery in their own artistic language, ultimately painting a view into the cultural and historical heritage of Taiwan.
