Gaining international recognition in the early 1990s, Yu Youhan stands at the forefront of the Political Pop movement, and is among the earliest who popularized the image of Mao Zedong. Yu’s combination of traditional Chinese visual motifs and modern Western expression shook the Chinese art scene at the time, and in turn influenced many younger artists of that generation. His extensive use of decorative elements, such as floral design from Chinese textiles, placed the iconic image of Mao in a new consumerist context, which resonated strongly with Western audiences. The series is to this day considered the most important in Yu’s extensive oeuvre.
