Sun Liang is one of the most important Avant-garde Chinese artists in the ’85 Art Movement, remains active in the Contemporary scene today with his unique personal style and surreal expressions. Sun was hailed as China’s most original artist. Since the early 1990s, he has consciously been trying to cleanse himself of external influences, in order to probe into an inner world, of mysterious and symbolic expression. Sun studied traditional Chinese painting during his early years and considers calligraphy to be his ultimate teacher. He has since transferred his mastery of lines into oil painting, and continues to add color in the style of Chinese painting. Never relying on sketches, Sun Liang improvises and faces the blank canvas directly, allowing his mind to run wild.
